After the Last Supper, knowing His time was near, Jesus took three of His disciples, Peter, James and John, to pray with Him in the Garden of Gethsemane at the base of the Mount of Olives.
Jesus asked His friends to stay awake with Him and pray but instead of staying with Him to pray, they fell asleep. They had no idea what was about to happen.
Soon Judas arrived with the Roman soldiers who arrested Jesus and took Him away to stand trial.
About the painting:
Christ in His Agony, asking if "this cup might pass over Him". The three disciples asleep and the city of Jerusalem, off in the distance, aglow with festive lights as people celebrate Passover.
