Early Christian Cross - Jesus Christ Conquers
10 X 10 - acrylic on wood panel

return

Greek Symbols:
IC XC = Jesus Christ
NI KA = Conquers or Victorious

Inspiration: 1st Century Christians, were the first to say yes to Christ. Thousands were martyred in the first three centuries before the Roman Emperor Constantine became a Christian, thanks in part to his mother, Saint Helena, an early Christian herself.

Constantine had also seen a cross with the Greek symbol for Christ Conquers in the sky before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, Oct. 28, 312. As a result, he commanded his soldiers to wear the cross and the Greek symbol on their shields in the fight and they were victorious.

Not only did the early Christians leave us their fearless example, but they left for us a tangible connection through the images/icons they created, mostly on the walls of their underground sanctuaries in the catacombs.

NOTE: Religious images or icons are to glorify God and to teach us. They have been part of the Christian faith since its very beginning.
