Background: In the New Testament we read about Joseph being visited by an Angel of God, telling him, "Rise, take the Child and His Mother, and flee to Egypt..." This was to escape King Herod's order that all males under the age of two were to be killed in an effort to eliminate any threat from the New Born King whom Herod had learned of from the Magi searching for Jesus in the second chapter of Matthew. Inspiration: The Faith of Mary, who said, "YES" to God's call at the Annunciation and by Joseph's Faith to listen and respond to the Angel of God guiding him in the care of Christ and His Mother. Feast Day: Dec. 30th Personal Thoughts: When asked why I depict Saint Joseph as a young man, unlike many other depictions showing him old, often with gray hair, I reply, "I'm certain God would not have put His only Son and His Blessed Mother into the care of an old man." Blessed Fulton Sheen in his book, The World’s First Love “Joseph was probably a young man, strong, virile, athletic, handsome, chaste, and disciplined, the kind of man one sees ...working at a carpenter’s bench... He was not in the evening of life, but in its morning, bubbling over with energy, strength, and controlled passion.” |
An excellent article by Fr. Jon Hainsworth, explains when one experiences great spiritual events, such as Joseph and Mary did, earthly desires fall away which explains their relationship to those who question their relation. | |
