Saint Nicholas of Myra Icon |
Inspiration: His generosity. He gave away all his wealth to serve the poor. Saint Nicholas was born in the year 270 in the Greek seaport of Patara, Lycia to wealthy Christian parents. He became a bishop in the early Church in the City of Myra, in modern day Turkey, which is why he is depicted with a mitre and a crozier. He is remembered for his generosity which is why Christmas figures, such as Santa Claus, grew out of his legion. Most Famous Story: St. Nicholas saved three young women from being sold into servitude. For three nights he dropped gold pieces through the window of their home, giving their father enough money for a dowry for each young woman to be married instead of being sold. St. Nicholas died December 6, 343. Feast Day: December 6th in the Roman Catholic and Anglican Churches. December 19th in the Orthodox Church. Learn more about Saint Nicholas.
