Saint Nino, the Enlightener of Georgia Icon
14 X 21 - acrylic on birch panel

Inspiration: I am always amazed to learn about another early Christian who worked fearlessly to spread the Good News of the Gospel in foreign lands after Christ's resurrection. Saint Nino is one of those early Christians.

It's believed that Nino or Nina was born in Cappadocia in what is now Turkey around the year 280. She is credited for bringing Christianity to the people of Georgia. A video on You Tube tells her story.

Read more on Wikipedia about this beloved saint and the Grapevine cross she carries.

Another YouTube video on the ancient icons. There, in the caves created by nature, are many religious frescoes that are well over a 1000 years old. Read more on Wikipedia

Feast Day: January 14

Venerated in the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. She is of course the patron saint of the Country of Georgia.

This painting hangs in an Orthodox church.
