IHS means "In the Holy Name of Jesus". Over the years, the original meaning of the symbol has been lost; however, it may have originated as a Greek symbol meaning Christ. Later used in Latin In Hoc Signo which means in this sign.
The Jesuits (Society of Jesus) adopted the symbol as their emblem.
