The TRANSFIGURATION of Our Lord: Jesus took Peter, James, and John, up a high mountain by themselves. Then He was transfigured before them; His face shone like the sun and His clothes became white as light. And then appeared Moses and Elijah conversing with Him.

Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” ... suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them. Out of the cloud came a voice which said, "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him." --Matthew 17: 1-5

Note: In Orthodox paintings often there are strangely shaped mountains. I am only guessing, but it is my observation that they appear to be designed from the ancient volcanic landscape in the Cappadocia Region of Turkey. This important region in Church history is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Also note: Peter, James and John are without halos. This is because the Transfiguration is prior to Pentecost.

Feast Day: August 6th in the Roman Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican Churches.

Painted for an Orthodox church.
