The original words were written by Rev. William Whiting (1825-1878) a clergyman of the Church of England. Rev. Whiting resided on the English coast near the sea and had once survived a furious storm in the Mediterranean. It is also known as the Navy Hymn and played at the funeral services of Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Gerald Ford. |
